Now that hockey is back, I finally feel it’s ready to unleash the real reason I started creating 8-bit hockey players.  It’s this poster of the NHL’s first overall draft picks.  The characters are based off of the EA NHL Hockey 95 (PC version).  I have played this game more than most humans on this planet.  This poster is available for sale at Red Bubble.

    Love the poster.

But . . . as a ‘Hawks fan, it’s disconcerting to see Patrick Kane in that god-awful black alt jersey rather than the classic home red one.

  2. Jeremy says:

also, since Fleury has come up here a couple times and it’s getting popular around facebook with the hockey blogs…

you might want to look at the colors of his pads back in 03-06. he had those awful yellow pads but they were clearly his identifying mark for those first few seasons. I’m on board for buying a large size as soon as all the things are tweaked and proofed properly.

c’mon man, just because there is no client to proof it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t handle that yourself. great idea. just clean it up and you’ll sell boatloads (though you might want to clear that bg image for copyrights or just re-draw it yourself)

Hey guys. Just got the revised version up. Thanks for pointing out the issues.

1986 (Joe Murphy, Detroit) and 1999 (Patrik Stefan, Atlanta) jersey’s logos are backward, clearly just mirrored sprites.

  6. Scott says:

It is a great idea, but as everyone is pointing out you might want to double check everything before you publish something.

The naming of people per row is wrong, you need to move Michel Plasse from 1965 to 1968 when he was drafted, and move the other players (1964-1968_ down a spot. Also move Rejean Houle’s name from row 2 up to row 1)

Keep up the great designs though, its a really cool thing you have here

  7. Rene says:

Nice one, I like it a lot. However: in “Row five” Marc-Andrew Fleury is actually called Marc-André Fleury. You may just write Marc-Andre Fleury, but not Marc-Andrew Fleury.

  8. Vincent V says:

I agree with Shana, it’s amazing but here’s more tweaks to do:

The first line is wrong. Michel Plasse was a goaltender and was drafted in 1968 and some of those logos are flipped (all three North Stars, Red Wings ’86, Lightning ’00).

    • Justin says:

1965 is wrong as well. Andre Veilleux was a forward and drafted by the Rangers according to Hockey Reference. The Canadiens didn’t even draft a goalie that year.

  9. Shana says:

This poster is absolutely AMAZING. But before you sell it, I really think you should correct the spelling of names. Just a quick scan of names I found two misspellings. Don’t sell until everything is correct; it’s only fair to your customers.
