Once again, the Camp Douglas Brochure is finally here. This year, we tried something new, which is have the release date BEFORE Christmas, instead of after. The impacts really are that parents are able to book off summer holidays knowing the camp schedule in advance. This did put an undue pressure on the camp to finalize date and rates earlier than expected. With the help of our new camp director, Rebecca ‘Bert’ Simpson and the promotions committee we were able to assemble, approve and ship in short order.

I went off the deep end this year, with colors and boldness. I had a great set of photography to choose from, so it’s always best to start with your strengths. I had an earlier inspiration from a ROXY advertisement I had clipped several months back, and went for something bright, and unique.

Camp Douglas is a Presbyterian summer camp located on the Sunshine Coast in Roberts Creek, BC. Annually, I create their summer brochure to help promote the summer camping ministry for kids, teens and families. This 2009 version of the brochure was printed in a large, 3-fold design using large photographs of kids. Many camps choose a mish-mash of photos for their summer camp brochures. I decided to stray from the chaotic montage and create a clean, and eye-catching photo composite using the kids, the camp dock, and a sunset.

I contracted for the Executive Communications department within TELUS fro many years, and one thing I know for sure, Darren Entwistle is one smart guy. Any time a corporation gets big and start integrating into our lives, we seem to get the hate on. But when I joined, TELUS was an dinosaur telco valued at $4,00 per share. I think at it’s peak, I saw a moving technology company valued at over $80 per share.

One of TELUS’ strengths is the TELUS brand, which I seem to have a knack for exploiting. This is one of the few print designs I was asked to create. I struggled with putting critters, and plants all over the place, but after I deleted all the layers from my mockup, the clean look of starfish centered became the clear choice.

Since I think this this the first print design that I would consider professionally created. Previous print projects were more, let’s say, ‘hobby’ projects. I’m particularly happy with how the deep the tones feel in this brochure. I also think it’s a perfect mix of happy kid-friendly, natural, and organic.

Summer camping for kids is becoming more and more difficult to promote as there are so many programs that parents can ‘drop’ their kids off. Competing against computer camps, sports camps, and day camps, our brochure needs to have some boldness to stand out against the other advertising brochures.

This brochure is a four panel gate fold.

TeamVision is one of TELUS’ most prominent means of communication with their employees. On the 5th anniversary of their first broadcast, a large promotion and give away was organized across Canada. Part of the festivities was handing out handbills to employeess in the different regions with a secret code to see if they won. I created a unique formula for generating winners, and was able to create a secure site to give you the good (or bad) news.

I took over the duties of designing Camp Douglas’ brochure this year and wanted to wow the socks of the committee. Trouble with choosing orange as a key color is that it’s so extremely bold, that it’s hard to highlight the various parts of the brochure. So monochromatic hues were used, against brighter, stronger imagery. Over the years, background extraction has become a specialty of mine, and I implimented this skill in having the kids (Zander and Spiderman) bust out of their bubble frames.

The aim was to deliver the life, vibrancy and excitement of summer camping. I should mention at this point that I’ve been attending, leading and operating with Camp Douglas since I was 8 years old, and I have a soft spot for the merits of summer camping and the amazing impact it has on the lives of children.

There was quite a risk, because, in like the rest of the freezing Canadian cities, a community like Victoria has limited hockey facilities, and none with availability.

Year one, I whipped this up for the Yue brothers so they can start running around parking lots and putting something in windshields, in hopes that there’s enough beer-league hockey players to start something fun. Turns out, there was more than enough!
